Durham Christmas Festival

Event Date(s)

01/12/2017 - 03/12/2017 - 3 day(s)

Information For Trader/Participants

Market Square Group adds to the Christmas festivities in one of England's most historic and picturesque cities for a third year.

The addition of a third element to Durham's popular and well established Christmas market on Millennium Place in the City Centre was well received in previous years. There proved to be plenty of footfall to go round, as visitors moved around the City between the venues of Palace Green, Market Square and Millennium Place.

2017 promises to further establish the credentials of this third venue and we are confident that there is an excellent trading opportunity here for a range of products from hot food to Christmas gifts.

The Durham Christmas Market has been established over many years and in December 2015 it was number 1 in the Independent newspaper's list of the top 5 Christmas Festivals in the UK.

Information For Visitors

Durham Christmas Market offers three main arenas, Palace Green, Market Square and Millennium Place - the latter being adjacent to the main park and ride bus stop and a main thoroughfare to the City from the main car parks.

The three points of this triangle are all within easy walking distance and make for a route through the heart of the City. The market on Millennium Place will offer a hot food and mulled wine area, Christmas gifts, hamper ideas, and stocking fillers with local, national and international stalls in the line up.

We will list the stalls that you can find on Millennium Place as bookings come through. Please go to our visitor page for more information.

Interesting Facts About The Venue

County Durham is unique, as for many centuries it was a virtually independent state, ruled not by the king, but by powerful `Prince Bishops', who were more or less the `Kings of County Durham'.

During its greatest period in the 7th and 8th centuries, Northumbria was a great centre for arts, learning and early Christianity and was especially noted for the great saints it produced, like Cuthbert, Wilfrid and the Venerable Bede. Northumbria's downfall was brought about in later centuries, by successive invasion from Vikings and Scots, so by the time of the Norman Conquest, it was reduced to an earldom stretching from the River Tweed to the Tees.

Durham University (legally the University of Durham) is a collegiate research university in Durham, North East England. It was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and granted a Royal Charter in 1837. It was one of the first universities to commence tuition in England for more than 600 years and claims to be the third oldest university in England, and consequently the seventh oldest in the UK.
