Tenterden Food & Drink Festival

Event Date(s)

17/05/2019 - 19/05/2019 - 3 day(s)

Information For Trader/Participants

The third Tenterden Food & Drink Festival following our successful launch in 2017. The previous two years have shown that Tenterden is a strong all round event with products and produce selling well across the board. Bread and cheese for example are as popular with the visitors as takeaway food and the children's fair ground rides do steady business throughout the weekend. We all know that it is becoming increasingly difficult to build events where all participants do business, but Tenterden is certainly one of those rare examples and, given good weather, this festival has all the right ingredients for an excellent weekend of trading, with an informed and enthusiastic public, a family friendly environment and backdrop of independent retail shops in the High Street.

It is worth noting the catchment that Tenterden can call upon for its customer base. Not only does it have a local population living in the town who are used to shopping at high end independent retailers, but geographically, Tenterden is central to a good number of smaller up market villages on the Kent/Sussex boarder. These villagers will all come into Tenterden if there is a special event in town.

Information For Visitors

Our food festivals are designed to colour and vibrancy to a local area bringing together a regional, national and international showcase of food and drink products together with entertainment and other attractions providing a memorable experience for visitors.

Children's rides, a programme of live music and craft beer bars all adds to this tasty offer.

Interesting Facts About The Venue

Tenterden is proud of its association with William Caxton, the 15th century pioneer of printing who is thought to have been born in or near the town. Indeed, one of the local pubs at the end of High Street is called the Caxton Arms. There is some debate as to whether Caxton was actually a native of Tenterden - a more widely accepted view is that he was born somewhere in the Kentish Weald.

In the medieval period what is now Romney Marsh was largely under water, and seagoing ships docked at Smallhythe, just to the south of Tenterden. Wood from the Kentish Weald was used to build ships, and Tenterden was incorporated into the powerful Cinque Ports as a limb of Rye. That meant that Tenterden was exempt from regular taxation, was largely self-governing, and was entitled to have a representative at royal coronations. This association with the Cinque Ports is remembered in the town crest, which incorporates the Cinque Ports coat of arms.

The Tenterden Heritage Trail takes in the museums, the historic churches, the Elizabethan, Georgian and Victorian buildings and Town Hall that preserve Tenterden's heritage and make it such a visitor attraction. The town is also home to The Kent and East Sussex Railway where you can climb aboard one of its beautifully restored carriages and enjoy a trip through the picturesque Rother Valley to Bodiam Castle.
